Owner, NYSEG has proposed an installation of a new 10-inch steel gas pipe which will be crossing underneath the Susquehanna River in Vestal, NY. Around 1700 feet of pipe is to be installed by horizontal directional drilling (HDD) method. Design Engineer was DDS Companies.
The bore entrance is located in the lot of NYSEG’s training facility located along the Susquehanna River, the bore will then cross below the Susquehanna River and exit on Boland Dr along the Susquehanna River.
DDS Companies reached out to Turner Underground Installations, Inc. (TUGI) to drill and install the 1700 linear feet of 10-inch steel gas pipe under the Susquehanna River. The compound curve alignment was quite a challenge. To make this job even more interesting all 1700 linear feet of drilling was done through rock using water-line method. To complete this project, TUGI utilized their American-Augers 440T drill rig and AAMCD-1000 Reclaimer to efficiently finish this project.
Since drilling was happening so close to a body of water, environmental concerns were raised. We called upon the help of TRC to help with the any environmental concerns. TRC’s Environmental Inspector observed TUGI’s work throughout the duration of the project to make sure that all measures were taken to protect the environment. After work was completed, there was no negative effect to the environment caused by the drilling process.
TUGI’s thorough planning and drill crew’s wealth of experience helped to complete this 1,700 feet of 10-inch steel gas pipe on time and without any hitches.
