Project Overview

What prompted the need for the service? Rochester Gas & Electric needed to install 24” Steel Pipeline Main from existing stations in the Town of Chili, along Chili-Scottsville Road, to stations in the Town of Caledonia, along Wheatland Center Road.

Who was the service for?

  • Client
    • Rochester Gas & Electric

  • GC
    • DDS Companies

What were specs of the job?

Install 24” Steel Gas Main along various Towns, at different lengths using various methods.

Equipment Used: American Auger 440 was used for the HDD installation;  American Auger 36/42-600 E for the Auger-Bore method; Akkerman Guided Piot Tube System for Guided Pilot Bores

What challenges/obstacles occurred during? For all bores, and means of installation, the biggest challenge was soil conditions. Soil conditions were unknown for most bores. Having rock present at uncertain times would delay the work. Equipment would have to pulled out of the boring holes, swapped with the right equipment per the soil conditions and relaunch.

What was the ending outcome? After swapping the right equipment and materials for the correct materials then the crews would proceed to continue installation of the 24” Steel Gas Main. With the right tooling for rock conditions, the crews were able to successfully install all the bores in a well scheduled manner, doing better than the anticipated schedule for completion of work.
